BIRDING, TRAILS Adjoining the Jonkershoek State Forest and Hottentots Holland Nature Reserve in the beautiful Jonkershoek Valley, the Assegaaibosch Nature Reserve conserves 204 ha of montane fynbos (heath) which contains a number of rare proteas. Common duiker, Cape grysbok and small grey mongoose are quite frequently seen. The birdlife is varied, and includes grey-winged francolin, black eagle and Cape sugerbird. The neighbouring Jonkershoek State Forest is open during the day between May and September and has a variety of paths and trails. Permits are required. For additional information contact The Regional Director Western Cape Forest Region, Private Bag 9005, Cape Town, 8000 Location: South-east of Stellenbosch. Access: From Stellenbosch take the Jonkershoek road, and watch for signpost to the reserve on the right. Permits should be arranged in advance by telephone and collected from the Jonkershoek Fish Hatchery. Accommodation: None. Other facilities: Short walks; wild flower garden with labelled plants; picnic sit with fireplaces near the entrance gate. Open: Throughout the year. Opening time: Mat to September - weekdays 09h30 to 17h00, weekends - 08h00 to 17h00; October to April - weekdays 07h00 to 18h00, weekends 08h00 to 18h00.
